Lovely Silver Hildesheim Rose Ladle

This is an auction for a solid silver Ladle in the Hildesheim Rose pattern which would be ideal for cream or sugar. It is stamped 835 for the Continental silver standardCondition - Good to very good. Weight - 18 grams.Dimensions - Just over 4.6 inches long, the bowl is 1.6 inches wide. The Legend of the Rose of Hildesheim.The legend goes back to more than a thousand years ago during the reign of King Ludwig the Pious (778-840), the son of Germany's famous King Charles the Great.King Ludwig was very fond of hunting and one day, while chasing a beautiful white stag, he suddenly lost sight of his companions. He called for his comrades but nobody heard him. Tired and afraid, he took shelter under a wild rose bush and kissed the Sacred relic which he always carried. He hung it on the rose bush, knelt down and prayed to the Mother of God for help and soon fell asleep.When he woke up, snow was all around him. The relic was frozen to the rose bush but the roses bloomed even lovelier than before and the green splendour of summer was everywhere to be seen.Moved in his loneliness by this unusual scene, King Ludwig made a vow that, if he should be saved, he would erect a church right on the very spot where the rose bush stood. Soon afterwards he was found by the other members of the hunting party.King Ludwig kept his promise and built a chapel next to the wild rose bush. It was the first building where today is the gingerbread city of Hildesheim. Later it was converted into the large well-known Cathedral of Hildesheim and until this very day the rose bush is still in blossom every year.More than a thousand years later, in 1919, Christoph Widmann designed a silver rose which he called "The Rose of Hildesheim" after the legend. At this time he never knew that he was creating a new epoch for this famous rose. His company grew and grew and today the legend of the rose bush has become known all over the world through the silver roses of Christoph Widmann.The German poet Goethe described the rose as the most perfect living thing on earth. Centuries before the Persian poet Hafisa had alluded to it as the beauty-spot on the cheek of the earth. In early Christian times the rose symbolized the loving heart of the Mother of God. All this King Ludwig the Pious must have felt as he woke up to see the still beauty of roses in full bloom all around him.
