Donald A. Wollheim is one of the great, but little known, heroes of the popularization of science fiction, along with such greats as John W. Campbell, Forrest Ackerman, and Betty Ballantine. He helped start sci fi in fanzines, book anthologies, several magazines, Avon Books, Ace Books (including Ace doubles and the scores of famed writers whose book careers started with Ace), DAW books, the first paperback editions of Burroughs, the Fitzroy Jules Verne, The Lord of the Rings, Dune, and Heinlein's juveniles, and the mass popularization of fantasy paperbacks... Here are two historic artifacts from the beginning of his career. THE POCKET BOOK OF SCIENCE FICTION was the first ever book anthology with the words "science fiction" in the title from 1943--a book that helped popularize sci fi with G.I.s all over the planet with stories by Ambrose Bierce, H.G. Wells, Stanley Weinbaum ("A Martian Odyssey"), Theodore Sturgeon and Robert A. Heinlein. This copy is the third 1943 printing in very good- condition with creases, but bright white pages. Two years later Wollheim edited THE PORTABLE NOVELS OF SCIENCE (curiously leaving off the word "fiction") for Viking Press, which featured short novels by H.G. Wells THE FIRST MEN IN THE MOON, H.P.
