Winner receives a signed oil on canvas painting by well listed French Impressionist artist Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955). The painting depicts Le Lapin Agile Sous La Neige and is coming for sale from the collection of Mamdouha and Elmer Bobst. The piece is signed in the lower right corner (as seen magnified in picture 5). The painting has excellent provenance from Sotheby's, who handled the estate in April and June of 2016. The piece also has provenance from TransArt International, Paris, and it retains the original tag with dossier number on the verso, seen magnified in picture 9. In addition the piece retains another import label, seen magnified in picture 8. The canvas is stamped, but we can't quite make out the maker. The stamp can be seen magnified in picture 11. The piece retains its original ornate gallery frame, which can be seen magnified in picture 7. The frame also has a gold placard with Maurice Utrillo's name, seen in picture 6. The painting is wonderfully executed, and a fine example of Utrillo's work. The painting is in exquisite condition, with no rips, tears, repairs, staining, foxing, or in-painting. There is minor craquelure in the upper left corner as expected with age, but no other damage to mention. The original gallery frame is also in excellent condition with no cracks, repairs, or major losses. There are a few minor chips, but overall it's simply marvelous. It is a very ornate, finely detailed frame with gesso accents and is in near perfect condition. This piece is an absolute gem and ready for hanging. The frame measures roughly 31" x 28", with the image measuring roughly 21.75" x 18.5". Below is some information about the artist, whose auction results include a record $936,000 sale in 2007. Please note, this is an authentic Maurice Utrillo original oil painting with excellent provenance. The painting and gorgeous ornate gallery frame need absolutely nothing but a wall to be hanged on. Thank you for checking out our listing.Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955), was a French painter who specialized in cityscapes . Born in the Montmartre quarter of Paris, France , Utrillo is one of the few famous painters of Montmartre who was born there.Utrillo was the son of the artist Suzanne Valadon (born Marie-Clémentine Valadon), who was then an eighteen-year-old artist's model. She never revealed who was the father of her child; speculation exists that he was the offspring from a liaison with an equally young amateur painter named Boissy, or with the well established painter, Pierre-Cécile Puvis de Chavannes , or even with Renoir . In 1891 a Spanish artist, Miguel Utrillo y Molins, signed a legal document acknowledging paternity, although the question remains as to whether he was in fact the child's father.Valadon, who became a model after a fall from a trapeze ended her chosen career as a circus acrobat , found that posing for Berthe Morisot , Pierre-Auguste Renoir , Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec , and others provided her with an opportunity to study their techniques; in some cases, she also became their mistress. She taught herself to paint, and when Toulouse-Lautrec introduced her to Edgar Degas , he became her mentor. Eventually she became a peer of the artists she had posed for.Meanwhile, her mother was left to raise the young Maurice, who soon showed a troubling inclination toward truancy and alcoholism . When a mental illness took hold of the 21-year-old Utrillo in 1904, his mother encouraged him to take up painting. He soon showed real artistic talent. With no training beyond what his mother taught him, he drew and painted what he saw in Montmartre. After 1910 his work attracted critical attention, and by 1920 he was internationally acclaimed. In 1928, the French government awarded him the Cross of the Légion d'honneur .
