Gorgeous solid sterling silver (approx. 1-7/8" tall with solid bale; weight approx. 9.5 g) Cross pendant featuring ancient "budded" design with round centerpiece. The crossbar ends are shaped with three circles, or "buds" each. In a Christian context, such a design could symbolically represent the Holy Trinity, similarly to the three-leaved clover, or Shamrock. The centerpiece and crossbar ends display images of Orthodox icons including Christ the Ruler, "Alpha and Omega", and the Most Blessed Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus depicted on five venerated icons of the Mother of God symbolizing the Orthodox feast known as the "Laudation of the Mother of God". The side of the large necklace bale bears a sterling silver hallmark. Vintage appearance with some signs of wear, including significantly reduced quality and detail of images and inscriptions, scratches, dents and patches of silver patina or oxidation. The size and weight of the pendant are shown on the photographs for this listing.The obverse of the cross pendant bears an icon of the Savior, Jesus Christ, surrounded by images of the high Angelic beings guarding the God's Heavenly Throne, two four-winged Cherubs (Cherubim) and two six-winged Seraphs (Seraphim).The image of Christ is positioned in the larger round "Sun"-like centerpiece as a symbolic source of light for every Christian: "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness" (John 8:12). The image is known as one of the most venerated Orthodox icons of Christ named "Christ in Majesty", or "Christ in Glory", also known as "Christ the Pantocrator" (or "Pantokrator", meaning "Almighty", or "The Ruler"). The image was one of the first images of Christ acquired by the early Christian Church, and remains a central icon in the Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches. The image depicts Christ with a large cruciform halo around His head holding the New Testament in His left hand. The Sacred name of Jesus is inscribed on the left and right sides as the ancient "IC XC" Christogram.The image is surrounded by Scriptural inscription in Church Slavonic incorporated into the crossbars meaning "I AM THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA" (Revelation 22:13).The reverse of the cross is devoted to the Feast of Most Blessed Virgin Mary known in the Orthodox Church tradition as "Laudation of the Mother of God". It was often symbolized by simultaneous display of multiple icons depicting the Mother of God.The larger round centerpiece bears the image of the Mother of God as painted on the famous Russian icon "The Vladimir" Mother of God, also known as Our Lady of Vladimir, Theotokos of Vladimir, or Virgin of Vladimir, a medieval Byzantine icon of the Virgin Mary and Child Jesus. It is one of the most venerated Orthodox icons and a fine and early example of the iconography of the Eleusa (âTendernessâ) type, with the Baby Christ snuggling up to his Mother's cheek. The icon is displayed in the Tretyakov Gallery of Moscow, Russia, in a functioning church in the grounds of the museum. The Vladimirskaya Icon, as Russians name it, is generally accepted as the finest of the few Byzantine icons surviving from its period, and according to the art historian David Talbot Rice "is admitted by all who have seen it to be one of the most outstanding religious paintings of the world".The "Solar" circle surrounding the centerpiece bears an inscription of a Prayer to the Mother of God in Church Slavonic meaning approx. "OUR BLESSED MOTHER, OPEN FOR US THE GATES OF MERCY".The four "budded" crossbar ends bear four other images of the Mother of God, as depicted on the miraculous Orthodox icons.The bottom "budded" crossbar end bears another icon of the Mother of God of the Eleusa (âTendernessâ) type very similar to the "Vladimir" icon. The four-letter abbreviated inscription in Greek translates as "MOTHER OF GOD".
