Offered is a very fine antique shell cameo brooch. The subject depicts the wine god Bacchus, or a Bacchante follower. The carving is full of fine detail in good relief with three layers of the shell used. It is set in a gold plated frame and hallmarked on both sides of the pin hinge. I could only identify one old hallmark as sterling silver. There is a very fine wire decoration around the bezel. The workmanship on this is amazing. This piece measures 2 1/4" by 1 3/4" and weighs 21.3 grams. It is in very good antique used condition with some wear to the gold plating- original old c clasp and t hinge in good working order.
