Kim Ellington (born 1954), a popular contemporary potter in the Catawba Valley of North Carolina, was born and raised in Hickory, NC. He moved to Vale, NC in 1988 and with Burlon Craig's assistance, adopted the traditional methods of earlier generations of Catawba Valley potters, including digging his clay, formulating his own alkaline glazes, and wood-firing his pots in a groundhog kiln. His work was featured in "The Potter's Eye" exhibit and the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, NC and is the subject of a chapter in the book "The Potter's Eye" by Mark Hewitt and Nancy Sweezy (pages 174-189). His work has also been photographed in "Two Centuries of Potters: A Catawba Valley Tradition" published by the Lincoln County Historical Association (pages 104-105) and in "North Carolina Pottery: The Collection of the Mint Museums" edited by Barbara Perry (pages 95-96). The fantastic large Kim Ellington storage crock up for auction today truly invokes comparisons to the works of the 19 th century Catawba Valley potter Daniel Seagle.
