K, T&K, Ironstone China Floral Serving Bowl with Lid This auction is for one of the most remarkable China pieces we have ever seen. This is a RARE and Vintage (circa 1930) Floral Serving Bowl made of Ironstone China by Knowles, Taylor & Knowles (aka: KT&K). This wonderful piece consists of the bowl base and domed lid. The base is Ivory in color, is oblong in shape and measures 12½" in length, is 8½" wide at the center and stands 2" tall. The outer edge is lightly scalloped with a protruding handle on either end. T is a 1 ¼" rim that travels around the entire base. Two beautiful flower patterns are placed strategically abound the base in four locals. One pattern consists of a Pink Carnation sitting atop a stem of Green leaves. The second is a Yellow and Green stem, Green leaves along with Blue, Pink and Orange flowers. They are quite pretty. Underneath the bottom of the base is the hallmark. It has the letters " K-T&K " in green with the word " IVORY " below, also on Green. The Lid is also Ivory in color and also oblong to match the base. The lid is 10" long, 6¾" wide and just over 3½" tall. It has smooth edges and a scalloped loop handle that matched the edges of the base. The bottom edge is ridged so it fits snuggly onto the base. Two floral designs are also on the lid in four places. On each end is a large open Red Carnation atom a Green stem alongside a smaller budded Carnation. On each side of the lid is a more colorful and detailed design. These have a Pink and Green stem with a plethora of open and budded flowers in a variety of colors. Reds, Oranges, Purples and Pinks are all vividly arranged It is quite lovely. The overall piece stands nearly 6" tall when the lid is placed onto the base. The entire piece is very remarkable and quite RARE! It recently appraised for over $200.00. A Short History of K, T&K: Around 1870, Knowles decided that it was time for a change. He brought into the company his sons, Homer and Willis, and his son-in-law, Colonel John Taylor. Certainly he wanted to involve family members in the business, but he was also canny enough to know that he was bringing in like-minded progressives. Knowles had already earned a handful of patents having to do with pottery industry machinery and energy consumption. He knew that his sons and John Taylor were as forward-thinking as he, and would keep the pottery headed in the right direction: straight ahead into the 20th century. In 1872, the Knowles brothers and John Taylor added white ware, or ironstone, to the product line. They then completely abandoned production of the less-refined Rockingham and yellow ware. It was now 1880, and KT&K, with five kilns, was the largest pottery in East Liverpool. By 1888, the company had constructed an additional eight-kiln plant, bought out another pottery, and built another plant devoted exclusively to the production of fine porcelain, or bone china. Bone china was so called because it actually incorporated the ashes of calcined animal bones. Bone china had, for over a century, been an important product of English potteries; the addition of the bone ash to the clay heightened the whiteness and translucency of the ware. T are a few tine black marks, but I'm told they are part of the manufacturing process are in all the pieces of the time. I have taken photos of the actual piece you are bidding on.
