Jules Andre Smith (American, 1889-1959), untitled oil on masonite, stylized cityscape with black linear overlay, signed LR, framed, minor losses at edges, scattered paint loss throughout, not examined out of frame, ss: 23 1/2" h. x 23 1/2" w. [Deaccessioned from a Connecticut Museum.]Andre Smith of Florida received his formal training in architecture at Cornell University. However his desire for art led him to the medium of etching. A gold medal at the San Francisco Exhibition of 1915 added to his success in this field.During the First World War, Jules Smith was in the Army Camouflage section and became one of only eight artists commissioned to document the activities of the American Expeditionary Forces. He has explored new horizons in oil, watercolor, inks, cement, sculpture and printmaking.
