JENS QUISTGAARD FOR DANSK DENMARK QUISTGAARD'S COPPER BUFFET SERVER ON STAND You are bidding on a rare, large buffet server on stand designed by Jens Quistgaard for Dansk Designs, Denmark, as part of his prestigious 'Quistgaard's Copper' line of Modernist copper/brass cookware/buffet servers, c. 1960. This line was designed for multiple uses. For instance the set can be used stovetop or in the oven as a large dutch-oven or stockpot. It can also be used with its liner as an ice bucket. All of the lined pots in this line also make great cookie jars. The pot measures 7”h x 9.25” wide and the extreme measurements with lid are 8.5” h x 11.25” wide. The vessel on its stand is 10.5” high. There are no dents or deep scratches. The tinned lining is intact and clean. The porcelain liner is free from cracks or chips and its steel handle is also pristine. The brass and teak stand are in very good condition but could use a light polishing. 'Quistgaard's Copper' was the original name given by the Dansk firm for this extravagantly-crafted line of tin-lined copper cookware and serving pieces , featuring 'bow-tie' handles that echo his prestigious 'Rare Woods' forms, in an era in which 'Cordon Bleu'-style French tin-lined copper cookware was still new to most Americans. This highly collectible and extremely-rare line was produced briefly, from 1960-63, and marked with the early 'Four Ducks' mark on the handles, and porcelain liners, where applicable. Later 'reissues' in the early-1970's were made in Portugal and Spain, signed with a foil label, and are of inferior quality to this earlier offering, which was very expensive to manufacture and the original cost of each component was quite high, as this was a 'prestige' offering for Dansk Designs, hence its current rarity and popularity with Dansk/Quistgaard collectors. Stands with built-in alcohol burners were available for buffet service, and were interchangeable with every pot and serving piece in the line, either by 'flipping' the optional trivet, to safely hold smaller pots, or to eliminate the trivet entirely, with the pots resting on notches in the base struts, for large pots and chafing dishes. In this manner, and with Quistgaard's characteristic Scandinavian practicality, one could employ one stand interchangeably with each piece in the line, adding whatever pots you needed over time, to create a versatile, elegant and practical set of 'stove-to-table' servers of great elegance and taste, as well as great utility and function. The 'bow-tie' handles are of sturdy brass, strong with brass rivets into the sides of each pot, and onto the pot lids. 'Easy-grip' handles are elegantly arched and tapered, and the bases feature intricately-repousse'd copper, with 'in-body' wells for use with Denatured Alcohol,or the burner-covers can be removed in order to utilize Sterno cans, or a modern 'tea light', which fit perfectly, and are safer for modern use. The brass stands are fitted over Siamese Teak foundations, which can withstand hot temperatures and heavy use, and the brass supportive struts tapered and flared forms of the pot/lid handles, and sturdily-attached to the bases, creating a cohesive, eel-integtrated Modernist design that transforms these objects into streamlined, modern 'sculptures', rather than merely practical objects. As with the best of Quistgaard's brilliant designs for Dansk, 'form' and 'function' areperfectly-integrated into a satisfying, sculpt®al form that is as elegant and innovative today, as it was when first-introduced over fifty years ago. The 'Quistaard's Copper' line's simplicity, elegance and beauty are truly 'timeless'. All pieces are in excellent, vintage condition, with only minor scratches, and in some cases, soft 'dents', consistent with age and careful use, with intact tin linings, strong riveted joints, and bases free from looseness of any of the applied copper sheathing, or supportive struts. read more
