Japanese Iron Teapot "NAMBU TETSUBIN" A traditional iron teapot for the tea-lover in you. The expression on the teapot changes depending on how you show your affection. What's "Nambu Ironware" ? Nambu Ironware is said to have started in the middle of the 17th century when the southern feudal lord invited tea kettle craftsmen from Kyoto to Morioka and got them to make kettles for use in the tea ceremony. In the 18th century Nambu Ironware made improvements to the kettle and also made it smaller. It thus became easy even for the general public to use. Nambu Ironware is made by pouring molten iron into a mold. Therefore Nambu Ironware such as kettles are called castings. Although there are various ways of making things from iron, here are three of the most common: The first is metal casting, the second forging, and the third engraving. The first, (metal casting) became the manufacturing method for Nambu Ironware such as kettles. Metal casting is also known simply as casting. In the casting production method, bright red molten iron is poured in to the mold (known as "Igata" in Japanese), and left to solidify. Ironware made in this manner is known as "Cast iron". In the original kettles, parts such as the kettle body, spout, cover, and handle were made by casting. The handle grip was made by a blacksmith using the forging method.
