When the Haviland artists came up with a new pattern, they would initially lay out the design on a white or other solid color piece. When they wanted to be really creative or needed another pattern, just like they would use various piece shapes, major designs, trim over and over to create more patterns, so too they used the "cream band" to add patterns. This is most recognizable on patterns like Paradise / Chambord, Blois / Eden and Coromandel and Ganga for example. If you compare those patterns between the two, they are almost twins of each other. The only difference, a cream band around the piece on one of them, the other, all white background. Note that each had its own pattern name. CALCUTTA is sort of a contradiction to that process. Haviland produced CALCUTTA WITH and WITHOUT the cream band, but maintained the pattern name, CALCUTTA, on both versions (when they bothered to place a pattern name on pieces) The cream band varied in sets from pronounced
