Greta Garbo by Arnold Genthe (c. 1925). Portrait Photo (12.5" X 10"). Vintage silver gelatin, double weight, matte finish portrait by Arnold Genthe. Genthe (1869-1942) was a German born photographer whose series of photographs would be the first images of Greta Garbo to present the rising star as an artist. One of his photos, which was published in Vanity Fair in 1925, was Garbo's first introduction to the American public. Garbo and her mentor and director Mauritz Stiller were in New York upon their arrival from Europe awaiting instructions from MGM. The artist was introduced to Genthe who immediately wanted to photograph her. These photographs have become famous in their own right and originals are almost impossible to obtain. The portrait is mounted to a larger 14" X 18" heavier paper board which has Garbo's name in the lower edge and on the verso has a rubber stamp which says, "Surplus Duplicate Library of Congress."
