Published by Paris, 1869., 1869Thick Royal 8vo (8 x 11.5ins, 200 x 290mm) nicely bound in contemporary red half morocco, decorated and gilt, all edges gilt. pp lxiii, 480, Hand-coloured title-page, 70 fine hand-coloured plates of animals in human form, bold and well coloured. Preliminary leaves a little foxed, otherwise the plates in good condition and with nice contemporary colour. This work established "Grandville"'s early style of bitter burlesque and encompasses social manners, the satire of institutions and prejudices, the foibles and humours of mankind (Ray p198). Certainly the anthropomorphic metamorphosis of animals to humans and vice versa parallels the works of Lewis Carroll, and is full of amusing yet disturbing imagery.Offered here are 4 plates from the series above
