GLENDONITE CRYSTAL CLUSTER ORIGIN: TERSKIY BEREG, WHITE SEA COAST, RUSSIASIZE: Approx. 1-1/8" x 7/8" x 3/4" We had the opportunity to pick up a few specimens of Glendonite in Tucson. Glendonites are calcite (Vaterite) pseudomorphs of Ikaite, a unstable hydrous carbonate mineral. They are rather rare, because t are few locations in the world that have the correct conditions for the formation of Ikaite, which uses water molecules in its structure and decays when it is removed from the conditions in which it formed, reverting back to calcium carbonate. Glendonite itself is stable. The red-ocher color is due to mud inclusions as the calcite replaced the Ikaite. This specimen is from Terskiy Bereg, on the White Sea Coast in Russia. You can see more mineral specimens and crystals in our store, Stone Temple Lapidary . Click to see more Glendonite!
