George Thompson FOR Steuben Glass - PRESENTATION BOWL JOSEPH F. CULLMAN 3RD., CEO OF PHILIP MORRIS Cup-shaped bowl, 8" high, 10 3/4" diameter (at rim), the underside of the low foot with incised lettering, "Steuben." A presentation piece, engraved, "Joseph F. Cullman 3rd / Commissioner / [device] / The Port Authority of / New York and New Jersey / 1976-1983." Aside from minor scratches to the underside of the foot, in fine condition. Purchased directly f rom the Cullm an estate. "Cup-Shaped Bowl" is listed in Steuben Glass' 1992 catalog (model #7916) for $1,100 (unengraved), the design identified there as being by George Thompson. Joseph Cullman (April 9, 1912 – April 30, 2004). CEO of Philip Morris Company from 1957 to 1978 and tennis aficionado. During his tenure as CEO, the Philip Morris brand Marlboro became the most popular brand of cigarette in the United States . Described as "the cigarette industry’s chief defender against the anti-tobacco movement," he oversaw the creation of the successful Marlboro Man campaign from the 1950s onwards, which has since become known as an icon of American TV advertising .
