This wonderful, old document is on vellum and has been beautifully hand-written: it bears the seal and signature for John Wright of Hadleigh in Suffolk, England. It is an indenture ~ a legal document which provides a contract between parties, often for land and property ~ and in this case, it is land in the area of the village of Hadleigh. It is dated 11 June 1795, the reign of King George III, and it was between John Wright, potman (?), and Thomas Mann, a farmer. Various other names of landowners and tenants are mentioned. It bears the seal for John Wright which features a profile of what appears to be an animal of some sort. It is also witnessed by two men, John Hall and Isaac Bush. This is part of a small collection of fascinating old documents relating to the Hadleigh area. It is a large document, measuring 75cms by 62cms: it is in very good condition for something that is over 200 years old. This makes fascinating reading and could be framed for display under light resistant glass: it could be added to a local history collection or add further information to family history records. Collection in person is welcomed: local delivery in Cambridgeshire is free of charge.
