Hammond1959 First Hardback Printing!Illustrated Full Color Maps!The author wrote in the Preface to this 1959 book, "For more than a hundred years there has been a need for Geography of the Book of Mormon. Many attempts have been made to fill that need; but none have proved satisfactory because they have tried to make Book of Mormon countries fit modern maps. This cannot be done for the simple reason that the whole 'face of the land,' as it existed in Book of Mormon times, has undergone a physical change... It follows, then, that to undertake this work one must banish from his mind all present day maps and allow himself to freely compose a geography as Mormon develops it from the book, exclusively, aided wherever possible by discoveries of archaeologists, and statements by historians, where these add to and support the Book of Mormon and do not contradict it."Here are some additional quotations from the book: "No doubt but that some Book of Mormon scholars try to solve this problem by averring that the 'land southward' was what is now South America and the 'land northward' was everything north of Panama ... But those conclusions cannot stand up under the description of that land as found in the sacred record..." (Pg. 2-3)"What we do mean is that the geography of the Book of Mormon, taken from the record, alone, does not include South America as presently constituted." (Pg. 18)"However, it must be kept constantly in mind that due to the great change in the geographical features of the land that took place at the crucifixion of Christ, we may not expect to locate a place in what is now Central America and say this is where Zarahemla was." (Pg. 34)"It is interesting to ascertain what land Mormon considered the 'land northward' to be. Many have supposed he meant it to be the land near what is now Palmyra , New York , or the Great Lakes region. This could hardly be the land he had in mind..." (Pg. 57)"It is my aim to show that the Book of Mormon peoples knew but one hill Cumorah, and that it was not in what is now New York state." (Pg. 73)"No amount of juggling of the Book of Mormon text can place the hill Ramah-Cumorah in what is now New York state. It was somewhere in what is now Central America ." (Pg. 90)"Some Book of Mormon scholars object to placing a hill Cumorah in what is now Central America, because, they say, a hill there and the present one in New York would make two hills Cumorah. Well, what if it does?There are several places in the sacred record where two different cities or lands have the same name." (Pg. 92)"To affirm that the last great battle between the Nephites and the Lamanites took place in the neighborhood of the New York hill Cumorah or the Great Lakes region disrupts and confuses the entire concept of Book of Mormon geography."
