Franklin Library: Ezra Pound: A Draft of XXX Cantos Franklin Library FULL leather top-of-the-line edition of Ezra Pound's "Personae: A Draft of XXX Cantos, a Limited edition, one of the GREATEST BOOKS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY series, published in 1980. Bound in a Most Handsome red Moroccan cowhide, the book has French moire silk end leaves, satin book marker, hubbed spine, 22 kt. gold gilding on three edges--in near FINE condition. Ezra Weston Loomis Pound , who lived from 1885 – 1972, was an American expatriate poet and critic who was a major figure of the Modernist movement in the first half of the 20th century. He is generally considered the poet most responsible for defining and promoting a modernist aesthetic in poetry. During the second decade of the twentieth century, Pound opened an exchange of work and ideas between British and American writers, and was famous for the generosity with which he advanced the work of such contemporaries as Robert Frost, William Carlos Williams, Marianne Moore, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, and especially T.S. Eliot. His own significant contributions to poetry begin with his promotion of Imagiam, a movement in poetry which derived its technique from classical Chinese and Japanese poetry—stressing clarity, precision, and economy of language, and forgoing traditional rhyme and meter in order to, in Pound's words, "compose in the sequence of the musical phrase, not in the sequence of the metronome." His later work, spanning nearly fifty years, focused on his epic poem "The Cantos." Pound was born in HAILEY, IDAHO, but his family moved to PHILADEPHIA when he was three years old. Pound graduated from the University of Pennsylvania where he was friends with the future baby doctor poet, William Carlos Williams. Pound moved to Europe in 1908, visiting Gibraltar, Venice, and settling briefly in London where he married Dorothy Shakespear. Pound became intimate friends with W.B. Yeats, Ford Maddox Ford, and T.S. Eliot. Then Pound moved to Paris where he was friends with Ernest Hemingway and James Joyce. In 1924, Pound left Paris for Rapallo, Italy. He fathered a child with a lady not his wife and Dorothy responded by giving birth to a child that was not Pound's! During World War II, Pound stayed in Italy and broadcast messages on Italian radio, condemning the U.S. and supporting Mussolini. When the war was over, Pound was arrested and detained at PISA, ITALY, in an open-wire detention camp. There he wrote the PISAN CANTOS. In November 1945, Pound was flown to the U.S. and indicted for TREASON. Pound ultimately pled "insanity" and was held for twelve years at St. Elizabeths Hospital. Fellow writers, Robert Frost and Ernest Hemingway, led a campaign to have Pound released. While imprisoned in the Hospital in 1949, Pound was awarded the BOLLINGEN PRIZE, the most prestigious national award for poetry. In 1958, Pound left the U.S. with his daughter Maria and wife Dorothy and returned to Italy where he lived until his death in 1972. "Personae" was first published in 1926 and " A Draft of XXX Cantos" is the first volume of the long poem that occupied Pound for most of his creative life. Each canto is in the conversational mode and is cunningly devised imitation of a casual conversation; however Pound continually quotes and paraphrases the correspondence of the Renaissance Italians, and frequently incorporates fragments of the Greek and Roman poets. Canto I is a translation of a passage from Homer's ODYSSEY. The next six cantos also touch on themes of metamorphosis and the sea voyage. Cantos VIII-XI trace the life of Sigismundo Malatesta, a Renaissance Italian. Canto XIV is wholly devoted to Confuscius. The following two cantos are Pound's version of hell, metaphorically based on his experiences in England in the 1910s. The remaining Cantos range over a variety of topics from Kublai Khan to Thomas Jefferson. Yeats, W.H. Auden and Ezra Pound are considered the three finest Poets of the Twentieth Century.
