Original First World War casualty medal group including Memorial Plaque and Scroll awarded to Lance Corporal William Cockburn.He commenced the war serving with the Yorkshire Regiment, arriving in France on 9th September 1915, but was later transferred to the 23rd (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers and it was whilst serving with this Battalion that he died of wounds on 2nd May 1917 aged 22 years. He was at the time a Prisoner Of War in Germany.He is buried at Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany.He was the son of the late John and Dorothy Cockburn, of Elyhaugh, Felton, Morpeth, Northumberland.The 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medals named in impressed capitals to:17296 PTE.
