FABULOUS RARE EAPG GILLINDER'S CLASSIC CELERY VASE This Auction is for a Rare Classic Pattern Celery Vase. This vase is absolutely Wonderful in Design. This vase will compliment so many collections --EAPG Glassware, Mythology, Art Nouveau Purist, Gillinder & Sons, Very Early (maybe the first) Button and Daisy Pattern Glassware Manufacturer's Pieces, and more I can't think of !!! -- Maybe you can ! -- I just know this is a Fabulous Piece of Early Art Glass and if I could I would list it in 5 categories-- but I can not --so I hope you find it w it is listed !! This fabulous piece is a "Becki's" Piece. She used it as a Flower Vase along with 2 other Classic Celery Vases. Fresh roses filled this wonderful vase for over 50 years. Her companion/housekeeper made her rose water "splash" from fresh roses every day ( see items 320253503743 and 320256291467 for the full story of "Becki" and the the rose water). When Becki passed away in the late 1970's, "Uncle Otis" inherited 6 pieces of Gillinder and Sons and brought them from Paris back to the USA. In my non-expert opinion this piece is worth a first, second and third look --it is just that nice--Great Condition for its age and as I have said being used for 50 years. I, we (husband/photographer) tried to capture ever look of this wonderful piece of History! Please enlarge photos to view the full beauty of this gorgeous piece of what I would consider, True Art Glass ! It is written in several Pattern Glass Reference Books that the pattern is named from the plaques showing beautifully designed Mythology female figures, on a few pieces a Mythology man figure, copied from Flaxman's designs such as are used in Bullfinch's "Mythology" : the figures are different on each piece and none is repeated on any one piece. Each of these wonderful female figure panels are frosted/satin finished. These lovely figures are contrasted with 6 clumsy and crooked "wooden" glass legs. This celery vase/flower vase is hexagonal in cross-section, with 6 straight sides flat from rim to shoulder, from whence they turn sharply inward with flat sloping panels. From the lower angle between each panel these sloping sides t extends outward and down a leg bend slightly and sliced off diagonally at the end for stability. Each leg is "barked" with stomata (breathing pores) in the bark. This celery vase has 6 free-standing legs. The various pieces in the Classic Pattern may be found with both type of legs, collared base or free-standing. The reason Gillinder & Sons went to the "collared base" design or close footed as it is sometimes called is because the free-standing leg design of the hollow pieces were so difficult to extract from the molds. The rim is plain and horizontal. T are six panels on this piece, three of these panels have beautify draped "Mytholgy" figures, three females. The other three panels are filled with fine "Daisy-and-Button" design. The "Daisy and Button" motif is an old European one, and Gillinder & Sons was one of the first if not the first, American firm to make it. This would have to be one of the earliest pieces they used the "Daisy and Button" design on as they marketed in-numerable small souvenirs for visitors to the Philadelphia Centennial in 1876 in the "Daisy and Button" motif. Soon after the fair, the motif appeared on table-sets, etc. often combined with other motifs; it did not die out until well after 1900. Three panels on the body are flat except for the raised "Mytholgy" female figures which are frosted/satin glass. The other three are the "Daisy and Button" motif, these three are clear brilliant glass. The corners being plain rounded Doric columns with typical capital at the top of each; a broad Gothic arch spans the top of each of the six panels. At the base of each of the Doric capitals t is a circular end of a branch, showing growth rings; the barked log fades away below in the leafage.
