Dovetailed Copper Measure Ca 1870Offered is a four gallon English measureThe measure stands 15" high and has a 15" diameter base. In very good condition with few dents. The measure has lead marks and is dovetailed. British Imperial Standards, passed in late 19th Century, ensured no importer was going to be cheated. Measures of all sizes and uses were marked with a lead verification stamp. In cases of long usage, more than one stamp may be found exhibiting the diligence of the British system of weights & measures. The lead stamp on this measure depicts a crown & the letters VR, from the time of Queen Victoria. The content of copper in antique copper ware is far greater than that of contemporary copper ware.
