DOUBLE-TERMINATED, GEMMY RED BERYL CRYSTAL (BIXBITE), WAH WAH MTNS Thumbnail specimen of a double-terminated RED BERYL crystal from the Violet Claims mine in Wah Wah Mountains, Utah. This red beryl has medium-dark raspberry red color. Half of the crystal is gemmy, transparent clean. Exceptional specimen. It measures approximately 3 x 3 x 6.5 mm. Excerpt from JCK (Jeweler's Circular Keystone) Magazine on Red Beryl: Three factors make red beryl an important gemstone: First, tâe(tm)s its color. Gems that we consider beautiful almost always contain highly saturated pure hues. While red beryl can be found in a light pinkish red, itâe(tm)s more typically seen as a very saturated deep red, often described as âeoeraspberry.âe It commonly contains secondary colors of purple, orange, or violet. Its color depends on the concentration of manganese. Next, tâe(tm)s its family tree. Beryl, which is mostly known for its green variety (emerald), also includes greenish-blue to bluish-green aquamarine, pink morganite, âeoegoldenâe heliodor, and red beryl. Last is its rarity. Red beryl is the rarest of all beryls. The only commercially viable gem-quality source of red beryl was the Ruby-Violet mines in the Wah Wah Mountains. These mines produced only small quantities of cuttable material. Most of the stones found t were mineral specimens that were rarely faceted into gemstones. Gem beryls generally are recovered from pegmatites. But the beryls from the Ruby-Violet mines were found in rhyolite, a light-colored, fine-grained igneous rock. The presence of red beryl in the fissures within the rhyolite suggests that the Ruby-Violet mines were unique in nature. Red berylâe(tm)s color is permanent and impervious to heat or light. Itâe(tm)s an anhydrous mineral, meaning itâe(tm)s free from the water of crystallization. Thus it can be heated without cracking or exploding, as an emerald would. Faceted red beryl trades as a specialty stone at an average price of about $2,000 per carat (1999 price). Single stones 2 cts. or larger have commanded prices from $5,000 to $15,000 per carat, depending on their quality.
