Two very historic December 31, 1941 and January 5, 1942 letters. One letter is signed and the other letter is the White House file copy. The letters concern tickets received to see British Prime Minister Winston Churchill gave his rousing speech to a joint session of the United States Congress on December 26. 1941. The United States and Great Britain became Allies in World War II after the Japanese attacked the US at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. One letter is from President Roosevelt's personal White House Secretary Grace Tully and the other letter is from then United States Senator and later US Vice President Alben Barkley concerning two tickets sent by Senator Barkley to Grace Tully to see Churchill's historic speech. This letters came from the estate of Grace Tully who was President Roosevelt's Personal White House secretary. Please see the large number of Roosevelt White House items from the Grace Tully estate that I currently have listed or will be listing on eBay next couple of months. The first letter is dated December 31, 1941 and is the White House unsigned file copy of the letter and states "DECEMBER 31, 1941, DEAR SENATOR: I WANT YOU TO KNOW HOW VERY DEEPLY I APPRECIATE YOUR KINDNESS IN SENDING ME THE TWO TICKETS FOR THE CAPITOL WHEN MR. CHURCHILL WENT UP TO SPEAK BEFORE THE CONGRESS. YOU WERE MORE THAN KIND TO LET ME HAVE THESE AT THE TIME WHEN I KNOW THE DEMANDS MUST HAVE BEEN HEAVY. EVER SO MANY THANKS. WITH EVERY GOOD WISH TO YOU AND MRS. BARKLEY FOR THE NEW YEAR, ALWAYS SINCERELY, GRACE G. TULLY, HONORABLE ALBEN W. BARKLEY, UNITED STATES SENATE, WASHINGTON D.C. ". Senator Barley's Signed January 5, 1942 letter states "ALBEN W. BARKLEY, UNITED STATES SENATE, JANUARY 5, 1942, MISS GRACE TULLY, THE WHITE HOUSE, WASHINGTON, D.C., DEAR GRACE: LET ME THANK YOU FOR YOUR NOTE OF DECEMBER 31 ST CONCERNING THE TICKETS. IT WAS A PLEASURE TO BE ABLE TO SEND THEM TO YOU AND I AM GLAD TO KNOW YOU ENJOYED THE OCCASION. WITH EVERY GOOD WISH, I AM SINCERELY ALBEN W. BARKLEY". The letter is signed in black ink by Senator and later Vice President Alben Barkley. The Grace Tully file letter has a pencil notation "GRACE TULLY FOLDER" and is 8 x 9 ¼ inches in size and has a staple hole near the top left corner and otherwise looks very nice. The signed Barkley letter 8 x 10 ½ inches in size and has a notation in pencil that states "FOLDER" and has normal mailing folds and also looks very nice. Postage is combined on multiple purchases. Winston Churchill address ed U.S. Congress, December 26, 1941 Address ed Congress on December 26, 1941, Churchill won over his audience by telling them, "I cannot help reflecting that if my father had been American and my mother British, instead of the other way round, I might have got on my own." He added that the distressing pattern of recent events might persist for an extended period: "Many disappointments and unpleasant surprises await us." Shortly after the speech he suffered a mild heart attack, a diagnosis that his personal doctor concealed from everyone, including Churchill himself. Alben William Barkley ( November 24 , 1877 - April 30 , 1956 ) was a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives and the United States Senate from Paducah, Kentucky , and the thirty-fifth Vice President of the United States . House of Representatives Barkley was elected to the Sixty-third and to the six succeeding Congresses (1913 - 1927) representing Kentucky's 1st district in the U.S. House of Representatives . He gained statewide stature by leading a crusade against the coal and gambling special interests during his 1923 campaign for Governor of Kentucky. Barkley narrowly lost the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.
