De Porceleyne Fles Royal Delft Blue Peacock Plate 1988 Item: This scalloped edge plate will make the perfect addition to your Royal Delft collection. It measures approximately 7" / 18cm. Style: This piece is painted in the traditional blue delft style with a gorgeous peacock design. Artist: The initials are "AKW" however, I have been unable to identify this artist. Date: The date code is "DH" which is 1988. History: Koninklijke De Porceleyne Fles Royal Delft factory began in 1653. David Anthonisz van der Piet received approval to convert a mill into a paint mill for grinding the paint used to decorate Delftware. In 1655, the factory was sold to Wouter van Eenhoor and Quirijn Aldersz van Cleijnhoven and they formed a partnership. In 1697, the factory was sold to Johannes Knotter, who first introduced the fles (bottle or jar) in the signature. From 1701-1750, the factory was owned by Marcelis de Vlugt and hired Johannes van den Hoek as manager. The factory was then sold to father and son, Christoffel and Pieter van Doorne. 1771 was the onset of the Harlees period: Jacobus Harlees followed by Dirk Harlees. In 1804, the factory again changed hands to Henricus Arnoldus Piccardt. His daughter Geertruida Christina Magdalena Alida Piccardt took over the factory in 1851. Finally in 1876, Porceleyne Fles was taken over by Joost Thooft. This explains the often seen Joost Thooft & LaBouc name and the JT&L impressions on the base of many earlier pieces. Their trademark consists of the little bottle, the interwoven initials "JT", for Joost Thooft, and "Delft" written in a special longhand script. Under the trademark on the left is the painter's signature, and underneath on the right are one or two letters indicating the year in which the piece was made. The Porceleyne Fles date codes began in 1879 with the letter "A" through 2006 with the letters "EA". Of the 32 factories established in Delft in the 17th century, it is the only one that remains. They are known for their production of top quality porcelain and pottery. These are just a couple of reasons why their earthenware is so highly collectible.
