Covellite~ Star of Alaska, Gold Nugget,Gold Quartz pendant with White Sapphire set in Sterling Silver. The pendant is made by OROCAL one of the largest manufactures of Alaskan Jewelry as a coupon special for the Alaskan Cruise industry and sold for $239 in this Medium Size this summer. Due to overproduction and double up an order we are overstocked and are offering the pendant for $109. The Chain is a silver plated. Covelite: Star of Alaska jewelry contain an extremely rare mineral ( CuS ) which is found in Alaska and is a by product of copper mining. The rough material used to cut Star of Alaska stones was believed to be found at the Historic Kennicott Mine which closed in 1938. ( CuS is found in other places such as Montana and South America but sold mostly as specimen to collector.) When cut and polished it becomes a Gem quality midnight blue stone with flecks of gold pyrite. Because the material is natural some stones will be entirely blue other will have streaks of pyrite, both are desirable.Gold Quartz : Gold bearing quartz was formed in quartz deposited millions of years ago and is found underground by hard rock miners. Gold Nuggets : Broke out of the quartz during erosion into rivers and stream and is also know as placer gold. The Nuggets used in this pendant were found in the Alaska Yukon Territory.
