BLUE RIDGE POTTERY *********************************************** "Country Home" 12 1/2" Round Platter Skyline (Sleek & Plain) RARE! * A kind man named Ralph informed me that this pattern was originally named "Home Place"! ************************************************ On a Personal Note... My family fell in love with and began collecting Blue Ridge pieces about 20 years ago. On EVERY vacation, we would hit each 'hole in the wall' antique shop, hoping for a rare 'find'! We were blessed to meet some wonderful people along the way, have a great time 'hunting' together as a family and all the while acquiring quite a collection of Blue Ridge. The prices are not cheap, but the quality of these pieces is rare, as are many of the designs we are offering. WHY am I SELLING these beautiful pieces of pottery? My family has made a decision to 'pare down' our extensive collection ( our homes are full!) and we chose a variety of patterns to share. It is kind of like giving up a faithful old friend... but our loss is your gain! P.S. We're naturally, TENNESSEEANS! A LITTLE HISTORY OF THIS BEAUTIFUL POTTERY... Blue Ridge Pottery is all hand-painted with no two pieces alike , making it genuine Folk Art. Over the years, the pieces have become valued collector's items. The Southern Potteries Company was founded around the turn of the century in Erwin, Tennessee, a typical, small Southern town deep in the heart of the Smoky Mountains. The white Kaolin clay and Feldspar necessary to pottery-making was available in abundance in the area. Girls and women from the hills were trained in freehand painting and were soon creating beautiful, colorful pottery dishes. As a girl's painting skills increased, she would move from painting 'stems and leaves' to eventually painting and entire piece from start to finish. In 1938, Blue Ridge "Hand Painted Under The Glaze" dinnerware was born! Blue Ridge's fresh, uninhibited approach to design and a spectrum of vivid colors was welcomed and became and instant success. With the onset of the war, imports were cut off and US made potteries expanded greatly. At the height of it's success, employment at Southern Potteries increased from 100 at the beginning to over 1,000 with 24,000,000 pieces being produced a year. During the mid 40's and 50's this gave the small, mountainous community a much-needed chance for employment. On Thursday, January 31, 1957, Southern Potteries stockholders voted to close the plant. Imports were once again booming and "new, unbreakable, plastic dinnerware" flooded the market. The liquidation of Southern Potteries marked the end of over 40 years production of one of the nation's most attractive and original dinnerwares. If you put several pieces of the same pattern of Blue Ridge Pottery side-by-side, no two pieces would be alike. Looking at them carefully, you would find a leaf , a petal t, perhaps a flower added or left out, a vine tendril curling this way instead of that. in lies the charm of 'hand work', w each piece is different and w nothing is 'machine perfect'. Even today, you can visit the charming town of Erwin, nestled in the mountains close to Gatlinburg Tennessee, and still find an 'old timer' or two who helped create this beautiful, collectible artwork.
