THE COMPLETE GALAXY MAGAZINE & GALAXY NOVELS ON 3 DVDSOffered today is a unique collection of digital scans of all 262 classic issues of the famous science fiction magazine Galaxy. Also included in this collection is the complete set of all 46 Galaxy paperback novels that were published as companions to the magazine. As if that weren't enough, we have also included complete runs of two of Galaxy's sister magazines and near complete runs of two others. All have been digitally scanned, cover-to-cover, including all the editorials, letters to the editor, advertisements and of course, all the great stories for your reading pleasureGalaxy Science Fiction magazine began publication in October of 1950 and continued until the final issue in July of 1980. The magazine was briefly revived for eight issues in 1994/95, and these issues are also included in this collection. Every effort has been made to secure the nicest possible scans to include here. Some have been restored to white pages, others are direct scans, brown pages and all. In all cases the magazines are completely readable and legible.Most fans of the magazine are surprised to learn that Galaxy was originally published by an Italian company, World Editions, who were trying to break into the American magazine market. As editor they hired H. L. (Horace Leonard) Gold, who had cut his teeth editing Thrilling Wonder Stories, Startling Stories and Captain Future. Gold was also a fine writer in his own right. Gold convinced World Editions to also publish a line of paperback novels that reprinted science fiction classics from the past. World Editions paid writers an unprecedented three cents a word, compared to the usual one cent a word paid by other magazines. As a result, Gold had no problem attracting the best writers in the science fiction field. Gold very rapidly turned Galaxy into the leading science fiction magazine of it's time by printing stories that stressed social issues and the effects of futuristic technology, rather than just the technology itself. By focusing on this new direction, Gold transformed modern science fiction and set the stage for the "new wave" stories of the 1960s and beyond.Many modern classics of science fiction were published in the pages of Galaxy. Far too many to mention them all here. The first issue alone contained stories by Isaac Asimov, Fritz Leiber, and Theodore Sturgeon, as well as part one of a serial by Clifford D. Simak. Just in it's first few years galaxy published such classics as Ray Bradbury's "The Fireman", (later expanded as Fahrenheit 451), Robert A. Heinlein's "The Puppet Masters" and Alfred Bester's "The Demolished Man" and many others. Over it's three decades, virtually every important author of the genre saw their work published in Galaxy's pages including Isaac Asimov, Murray Leinster, Fritz Leiber, Theodore Sturgeon, Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein, Frederik Pohl, Algis Budrys, Harlan Ellison, Cordwainer Smith, Poul Anderson, Robert Silverberg, Jack Vance, Alfred Bester, Frank Herbert, Lester del Rey, Edgar Pangborn, Damon Knight, C. M. Kornbluth, Robert Sheckley, A. E. van Vogh, L. Sprague de Camp, Larry Niven and many, many more. The magazine also contained a popular book review section written by anthologist Groff Conklin and a science column written by space flight advocate and science writer Willy Ley that continued until his death in 1969.In 1961, due to poor health, Gold stepped back from his editorship and turned the reigns over to writer and literary agent Frederik Pohl, who had been helping edit the magazine for several years. Under Pohl, who continued as editor until 1969, Galaxy began publishing fantasy material in addition to science fiction.
