This item up for bid is an authentic Civil War cover printed in the 1860s. The First Day of Issue stamps are the Appomattox Civil War Centennial 5 cent stamp and a 1 cent Lincoln stamp postmarked April 9, 1965, Appomattox Virginia. T his envelope is in good condition and is unaddressed. According to information provided by Thomas Derbyshire, 3832 Main Street, Stratford, CT 06614, "These covers come originally from the numerous collections of Dr. W.D. Peer of Ohio. Peer had put together a collection of approx. 8000 civil war covers and used the majority of these covers to create first day covers mainly in the early 1960s to commemorate various Civil war events. These covers are authentic Civil War patriotic covers, printed in the 1860s and constitute a unique civil war item. In illustrating his fantastic book, 'The Catalog of Union Civil War Patriotic Covers' Author William Weiss Jr. used many of these exact covers as illustrations. as they were the only known example..."
