Historic ORIGINAL OLD GUARD medal for the VETERAN SOLDIER 1861 to 1865 (Civil War era) stamped WASHINGTON, D.C. This medal states that it is a limited edition medal and made from the propeller of the U.S.F.S. (Frigate Steamer) HARTFORD. It states that only 100 of these were made of Farragut Metal. My research of the USS HARTFORD shows the following: USS Hartford , Admiral David Glasgow Farragut's Flagship of the West Gulf Blockading Squadron 1861 - 1865. She made the passage of the forts at New Orleans and engaged the Confederate vessels t, 24 Apr 1862. Made passage past batteries at Vicksburg, 15 Jul 1862. Engaged the CSS Arkansas above Vicksburg, 15 Jul 1862. Passed the forts at Port Hudson, La., 14 Mar 1862. Bombardment of Fort Powell, Mobile Bay, 16 - 29 Feb 1864, Battle of Mobile Bay, 9 - 23 Aug 1864. After decommissioning, served as an apprentice training ship, Training ship, and Station ship until 1926. Foundered at her berth at Norfolk Navy Yard 20 November 1956. This item measures about 2 1/2" wide and 5 1/2" in length. It came from an estate with many other period ribbons, buttons and medals from the 1800's and early 1900's. This is made entirely of metal.
