A solid example of what is commonly called a "Cantel's Patent" canteen. Lazare Cantel patented this style of canteen on Oct. 14, 1862. Cantel initiated the innovation of lining leather canteens w/ tin or other metal to prevent an unpleasant taste being imparted to the water. Canteen measures approx. 9 3/4" x 7" w/out the strap. The 2 leather halves are held together by a multitude of copper rivets. There is a pewter spout & 2 brass rectangular eyelets for attachment to the strap. Cork included. Leather carrying strap w/ iron buckle. This example is the not patent marked version. A rare canteen seldom offered today. CONDITION: canteen body is quite solid showing minor abrasions. Spout & cork show light wear. Carrying strap is complete but well worn w/ a single break. Strap buckle is quite rusted. (02-11834/BF). $600-900.
