CHARLOTTE RHEAD T & R BOOTE TUBE LINED TILE - ENGLISH SOLDIER ITEM DESCRIPTION An exceptionally rare Charlotte Rhead tube-lined tile. It depicts a typically classical soldier, carrying a shield with the cross of St George on it. Charlotte produced a only a few tiles in this manner, which essentially formed her apprenticeship in tube-lining, some of which were sold recently as part of the Rhead-Cronin Collection in Exeter. I haven't seen an example with this decoration before, but it is likely that it was drawn from an illustration produced by a member of her family - possibly her brother Louis, her father Frederick, or her uncle, George Woolliscroft Rhead. Many of the other tiles she produced followed this classical theme, although she also designed others featuring houses & castles, Dutch scenes, animals and children. In many cases, they were produced as gifts for friends and family rather than for commercial sale, and were often mounted in oak frames. The tile itself is a T & R Boote blank, where Charlotte worked (producing more generic tile designs for shops etc), before joining Wood & Sons towards the end of 1912. It measures approx. 15cm (6") x 7.5cm (3"). (Literature: Collecting Rhead Pottery, Bernard Bumpus - 1999 Francis Joseph Publications; Pages 20 - 23) CONDITION Good overall condition. Some nibbles to the edges
