Catalogue of the Classic Contents of Strawberry Hill Collected by Horace Walpole, published by George Robins in 1842, for a sale over 24 days from Monday 25 th April, excluding Sundays. Walpole (1717 - 1797) was the youngest son of Sir Robert Walpole, the first British Prime Minister and, like his father, became a Whig Politician. He was an Art Historian, Antiquarian who amassed an important collection of historical items and a Man of Letters; many volumes of which were published after his death. This is probably the 6th of the seven known variations of the catalogue (excluding the London catalogue), which changed because of the wishes of the family vendors, with the lots more fully described than in the first and has 250pp. There is also a 24pp section at the front with the titles, introduction to and arrangements for the sale & including a preface, from an article published in William Harrison Ainsworth's magazine, describing the house & contents. The covers measure 8.25" x 10.25" (210mm x 260mm) The lots for the sixth day’s sale end at 160, the seventh & eighth days sales for prints, etc from the Round Tower (shown in the 5th edition) are removed and shown to be sold separately after the present sale, at Covent Garden, London. This edition is bound within plain board covers, titled to the spine, with the tissue protected frontispiece etching of Walpole lithographed by G.E. Madeley after a portrait by Eckhardt and the title-page by Landells after a design by Delamotte. The contents are good, with browning & some spotting to the end papers, a little occasional, mainly edge spotting, a few pages with corner creasing and the covers with some marking, knocking, rubbing & a little splitting to the spine. 800 Bidding Information I try to accurately describe each item, and photographs form part of the description.
