The carbines used by the U.S. Cavalry have always been of special interest to both historians and collectors. And Carbines of the U.S. Cavalry, 1861-1905 covers the entire crucial period stretching from the beginning of the Civil War in April 1861 through the introduction of the Model 1903 Springfield in 1905. During this forty-five-year period, more than sixty different types and varieties of carbines were available for field service---the bulk of this number being issued during the Civil War. These innovative carbines, and the men who carried them on horseback, played crucial roles in some of the most exciting episodes in American history, including the War Between the States, the Indian Campaigns, Custer's Last Stand, the Rough Riders in Cuba, the Philippine Insurrection, and the Boxer Rebellion. The year of 1873 saw the adoption of the .45-70 Trapdoor Springfield, which became the standard for the next twenty years, followed by the Krag and then later, the '03 Springfield.
