Meissen puce painted porcelain teacup with original saucer from the c1774 to c1784 period and displaying double ribbing, gilded gold accenting, pressnommers and decorators tally marks (continue reading below)DESCRIPTION:Antique Meissen porcelain hand painted in puce, tea cup and original matching saucer that are well over 200 years old and, in my opinion, are in excellent condition especially for age (see all 12 Photos; full condition statement given here below and also in the separate section as specified in this listing). Both cup and saucer retain about 75% of the original, tastefully applied gilding, and display a Kakiemon-style asymmetric decoration that portrays an oriental garden motif centered around a volcanic rock (Photos 1, 3, 6). The rock motif, however, displays decorative accents that also give it the appearance of a zoomorphic, lizard-like creature with two telescoping eyes, a mouth, flattened body covered with several armor-like large plates and a long reptilian tail (see Photos 3 and 6). The flowers exhibit Deutsche Blumen characteristics (Photos 6, 7, 10), and the interior face of both saucer and teacup are double ribbed composed of two bands of raised ridges slightly offset from each other (Photos 3 and 6). Interior ribbing was initially developed by Meissen about 1735 and was categorized as Plain Ribbing, Double Ribbing and Fancy Ribbing (see Dr. K. Berling, editor, Meissen China: An Illustrated History, pages 31 and 49 in the unabridged republication edition of Berlin's 1911 work reprinted by Dover Publications, 1972). Meissen Ribbing appears to be more popular on teawares in the 1760s and 1770s, but a critical review of its frequency remains to be quantitatively performed.Both the teacup and saucer listed here have a Marcolini-period dark grayish blue underglaze cross swords marks with an asterisk or star that was used by Meissen starting in 1774 (marks shown in Photos 2 and 4). The cross swords marks do not display factory cancellation tagging which would have happened if the vessels had production flaws considered unworthy of the Meissen factory name. Each vessel also exhibits Meissen pressnommers marks with a impressed '6' on the underside of the saucer and an impressed '39' on the bottom of the teacup (see Photo 4, 2). Also, each vessel displays a hand painted decorator's tally mark painted in puce on its underside: an H on the saucer (right on the inside of the foot ring), and a fancy looping 'E' on the base of the cup (Photo 4). Notably, the tea cup also has a nice loop handle that ends with a distinct lower knop or outward kick at its lower terminal (see Photo 10).In summary, information mentioned above helps place this teacup and saucer at the earlier portion of the Marcolini production period at Meissen. More notably are the internal double ribbed patterning, older style of the oriental garden scene motif, distinctive grayish-blue tint of the cobalt coloring in the marks, and the good quality of the design in shades of puce that combines very thin lines painted with a single camel hair brush with several wider brush head sizes to fill in broader shapes and spaces (see all Photos). All of these attributes help point to a likely production date before 1785, hence the c1779 mid-date as stated in the title and representing the mid-point of the c1774 to c1784 span.Both teacup and saucer are in very good condition with no major issues. There are no repairs, restoration, overpainting, hairlines, cracks, stains, deep scratches, or significant production flaws or defects on either cup or saucer. The overglaze puce decoration is more than 99.5% intact (see all Photos), and the gold gilding is about 75% to 80% intact with the most loss occurring along rim edges due to centuries of cleaning, use and storage.
