Burlon Bart Craig (B. B. Craig) (1914 - 2002) is credited by many with single-handedly keeping the traditions of Catawba Valley Pottery alive and serving as a bridge between the potters of the early 1900s and the contemporary Catawba potters of today (see Turners and Burners by Terry Zug). Burlon dug and cleaned his own clays by hand, turned his clay on a foot-powered wheel, and used a wood-fired kiln. Burlon used a continuous start-to-finish process that limited drying times and give Burlon's pieces a recognizable handmade folk-art look. Burlon was known for his generosity and helped other potters learn the craft. Burlon Craig is widely recognized for his talents. His works can be found in many museums, including the Smithsonian's permanent collections. Burlon received the prestigious National Folk Heritage Award from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1984. In 2003, Charlotte's Mint Museum of Art mounted a major exhibition, "Burlon Craig and His Legacy."Up for your consideration is an early example of Burlon Craig (BB Craig) pottery churn from the Catawba Valley. The churn is among the largest Burlon made at 6 gallons. The churn stands 20 inches high and about 12.5 inches wide. The churn is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs.
