AZURITE and MALACHITE on LIMONITEBlue Room, Juanita Mine, Magdalena, Socorro County, New Mexico DESCRIPTION Dimensions: 11.0 x 7.0 x 3.5 cm Composition: Azurite - Cu 3(CO 3) 2(OH) 2 Malachite - Cu 2(CO 3)(OH) 2 Limonite - Hydrated iron oxides Comments: Dozens of bright blue, lustrous crystals of azurite (about 1 to 2 mm in dimension) are found liberally coating pockets in an earthy, orange matrix of limonite. As with many specimens of azurite, there are several crystals that have altered to green malachite. It's a classic color combination seen from other famous localities like Morenci and Bisbee in nearby-Arizona.This specimen is from the Blue Room of the Juanita Mine, a mine that connects at depth to the more famous Kelly Mine of "Kelly Blue Smithsonite" fame. I collected these specimens of azurite in the first week of coming to New Mexico for college in 1988 and was pleasantly surprised to find an excellent cabinet specimen in the flats last week. This would be an excellent addition to your southwestern United States and azurite locality collection.
