Kit No. 485-149, ©1966 Weston Merchandising Corp. Due to the popularity and success Aurora was having with their line of monster model kits, they decided to also try their hand at capitalizing on the current hot rod car craze in late 1964, releasing model kits featuring both Frankenstein and Dracula driving souped-up spooky dragsters. It was no surprise those kits sold well and led to the introduction of additional hot rods featuring The Mummy and The Wolf Man in 1965. The following year saw the decision to include two of the Silver Screen's biggest monsters in this new line - King Kong and Godzilla. Aurora maestro James Bama declined art duties for these kits, with the illustration jobs falling to the talented Vic Prezio, who crafted stunning lid art for each release. But by 1966, a number of factors had cooled the hot rod/surf rock craze, not limited to, but including the British Invasion and Detroit's focus on muscle cars. Sales for Aurora's hot rod kits plummeted, giving the company serious pause about even releasing the King Kong and Godzilla kits. Ultimately a small production run was made, but distribution was limited to several stores in the tri-state area around Aurora's West Hempstead, NY headquarters.
