Up for auction is a Seagrove Pottery (Dorothy {Dot} Cole Auman and Walter Auman, 1953 to 1991), North Carolina Art Pottery, American Art Pottery, Southern Folk Pottery, Large Fluted Fan Vase with a Matte Green, Arts and Crafts Style Glaze that appears to contain a small amount of the substance rutile. This is a beautiful matt green fan vase, that I am attributing to the Seagrove Pottery of the Seagrove Community of North Carolina. If this vase holds true to the norm, Dot Auman turned it on the potters wheel and her husband Walter did the glazing. This vase is 1 of 3 pieces that I had acquired at the same estate. I was inclined at 1st to list these 3 pieces as J.B. Cole Pottery wares. Two of the 3 are small cabinet vases or miniatures if you prefer. One of these small vases is listed on eBay now and it has a gloss green glaze. I was inclined to think that Nell Cole Graves of the J.B. Cole pottery had turned the smaller pieces. She was known for her expertise in turning smaller items. It was then suggested to me by another collector, that Melvin ( M.L.) Owens or Dot Auman were most likely the makers of this wonderful fan vase. However, are the reasons that I am inclined to attribute this piece and the other 2 to the Seagrove Pottery (Dot Auman). The fact that this is a fan vase is one of them. In my research, I have been able to document more fan vases being made at Seagrove than I can personally find from M.L. Owens. The Aumans were also known to use the matt glazes quite a bit. I believe this was their way of contributing their skills and talents passed on from their 2 families. They made beautiful art pottery in the tradition of North Carolina Art Pottery while putting their own signature on items through their own interpretations, like using the matt glazes so often. When all 3 of the pieces that I acquired are compared to each other, it is obvious that they are all of the same clay. This fan vase is rather big, but as I stated the other 2 vases are small. The one small vase has not been listed yet, but it has the same identical matt green glaze that this vase has. This other small vase is a footed jardiniere vase and I have included 2 photographs of it with this listing to show the matt glazes and bottoms of both pieces for comparison. I felt this was important, so for a few days you can compare all 3 pieces if you would care too. The fact that 2 of these vases are small pieces are also why I believe this to be Seagrove-Auman Pottery fan vase. Once again I am unable to attribute much "small item" pottery to M.L. Owens. I bring M.L. up because it was suggested that his matt green was very close to the Seagrove matt green. With what examples I can find of each pottery's works to compare with, I believe this matt geen is closer to the Seagrove-Auman matt green as well. I believe a little knowledge of the family background also helps to contribute this piece to the Seagrove Pottery. Dot and Walter's marriage to each other also represented the marriage of 2 major North Carolina Art Pottery families. Dot Cole Auman was the daughter of Charlie C. Cole who owned the C.C. Cole Pottery. It is documented that after she and husband Walter started the Seagrove Pottery, she would still lend a hand at her fathers pottery. In later years it had to do with the ailing health of her brother Thurston and her father Charlie. Dote Cole began learning how to turn pottery wares at the age of 10. Once the women began to turn the wares next to the men folk, which began with Nell Cole Graves, they were often times given the job of turning out the smaller wares. The women showed the men that they too could do larger pieces, but by virtue of nature, most women have smaller hands. This led to the fact that the women could more easily facilitate the making of small items. It is also documented that the C.C.
