HERE'S AN ORIGINAL VINTAGE ARABIA POTTERY / WHITE-STONEWARE SUGAR W/ LID & CREAMER DESIGNED BY ULLA PROCOPE' IN HER BEAUTIFUL BROWN-BLACK "RUSKA" GLAZE (RUSKA TRANSLATES TO "FALL COLORS" IN FINNISH)!With the lid set into place, the sugar bowl measures approximately three and one half inches (3 1/2") in height by four inches (4") in diameter. Sorry.Ulla Procopé-Nyman Bio (information courtesy the website for Design Museum in Helsinki, Finland)Ulla Procopé-Nyman (1921-1968) was one of the most significant designers of the so-called golden age of Finnish design. The beginning of her career was typical of designers at the Arabia factory. Newly graduated from the Central School of Applied Art, this budding ceramist was hired in 1948 by the factory's Design Department, where she proved her skills in developing forms. In 1951 Ulla Procopé had to stop using the potter's wheel for reasons of health, and Kaj Franck included her in his product design team. Her interest in the design of utility objects dating from the student years now had to be focused on mass production. The wicker-handle GA teapots (1955-72) and the AL marmalade container (1953 - 67) are among her best-known works.Ulla Procopé found a major professional challenge when the Arabia factory's laboratory developed the new fire-resistant Liekki ceramic material for household objects. She first designed a series of casseroles that grew before long into a large collection of cooking dishes. Liekki kitchenware (1957 - 1978) with its warm brown glaze could be taken straight to the table from the cooker to be part of the setting, and the food would remain hot in it for a long while. Handling was facilitated by wicker coasters. The food did not have to be placed in a separate serving dish from the cooking dish, thus saving the housewife from extra washing up. It was also easy to keep the hard surface clean.A fruit service painted in strong cobalt colors, consisting of a tray, plates and two candlesticks and named Valencia was Ulla Procopé's own concept. Alternatives were being sought for the line followed by Arabia, which had become ascetic, and Valencia (1960 - 2002) was gradually expanded into a complete dinner, coffee and tea service. The designer was inspired by the richly coloured ceramics of Spain. - Because of a new production line, the material, faience, changed in 1979, to white stoneware, or vitroporcelain.Another large tableware collection emerged alongside Valencia. Ulla Procopé's Ruska service (1960 - 1999) was made of grey stoneware of high firing temperature that is extremely dense and solid. Owing to the toned Ruska glaze, no two items of the service are exactly alike. The spread of home appliances has placed a variety of durability requirements on table and kitchenware; Ruska is oven and dishwasher-proof. The service was presented at the Milan Triennial of 1960s. Since then, rustic, earthy and practical objects of distinct form came to be regarded as typical Finnish ceramic design. Ruska also became a highly popular export item. The service has included over thirty different parts. Ulla Procopé also designed the hand-painted Anemone and Rosmarin decoration for the same range of products, known at the factory as the S model.The work proved to be fateful for Ulla Procopé, who succumbed to illness in the middle of an industrious creative period, and she was never able to finish the design of a fine porcelain service, among other works.... read more
