The iconography subject is closely associated with a Greek icon of the Hodigitria Mother of God. The Icon of the Mother of God of Kazan made its apparition in 1579 at Kazan the capital of Tartar Khaganat recently captured by the Russians. By this Icon young people are blessed at the altar. The feasts were established on 22 October (5 November) and 8 (21) July. This old Orthodox icon was painted at the end of the 19 or the first years of the 20 century with the egg tempera on a wooden panel covered with "levkas" (gesso, special priming). The icon was painted in a typical Northern Russian style in one of many monastery or church shops of the Russian North. The icon wasn’t restored. Size = 12.2x10x0.7 (31x25.5x1.8 cm). Weight = 630 gr.
