ANTIQUE PRIMITIVE SALT GLAZED STONEWARE JUG MADE BY SEYMOUR & BOSWORTH HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT 1871 - 1890Antique salt glazed stoneware four gallon size jug made by Orson Hart Seymour and Stanley Bosworth in Hartford, Connecticut 1871 - 1890.Perhaps the most familiar name in Connecticut stoneware of the 1800's is that of the name Seymour. Israel Seymour and his generational offspring made stoneware their lives, and lived to expand and create successful businesses in both Connecticut and New York State. The last quarter of the 19th Century brought forward a nephew of Israel's named Orson Hart Seymour. Seymour was taken on as a partner with in the remaining business of the Goodwin & Webster pottery in 1857. With the passing of both Goodwin & Webster and Webster's son Charles now running the kiln, Orson Hart Seymour became a partner in the firm.Seymour partnered first with Webster, then with his brother Henry, and then in 1871 took on Stanley Bosworth. Adding to his family's legacy in stoneware, Orson Seymour made his historical mark with over 30 years of stoneware manufacturing.This is a four gallon size jug with a nice beehive form. The exterior is well salt glazed and toasty from the kiln. On the face is this abstract slip trailed tornado design. The design was done with blue cobalt glaze and occupies the entire front of the jug. Above the tornado is the legible makers and capacity stamps both blushed with blue as well. The makers stamp reads;SEYMOUR & BOSWORTH HARTFORD CONN.The potter gave us a tall neck suited for the jug with a tall lip with a beaded base. There is a sturdy strap handle and the jug is quite heavy and large enough to hold down a blank corner in your home or collection. There are some tiny flakes off the lip surface from use but the jug is entirely in beautiful condition. The jug is 17" tall and 11" wide at the base.We were taking a close look at the jug and given the spots which are part of the design we were surprised when we discovered that one of them was a bullet hole! Looks like the jug was practice for a 22 at some point and there is a small bullet hole on the face.
