Antique Salt Glazed Stoneware Jug With Cobalt Flower and Daubed Handle Terminal.OK PRIMITIVE LOVERS!!! LOOK AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS JUG.This is a one gallon size, salt glazed, stoneware Chandler Jug. We attribute this jug to the kiln at Cornwall, New York in the early to mid 1800's. We know that this jug was made most likely to be barged or boated when distributed. There is a sturdy strap handle which is daubed in blue cobalt on the top terminal. The potter incised a line under the lip for tying down a coverlet. The jug stands 11+" high and 8+" wide at the hip. On the front face shoulder there is a cobalt flower, very dark and shadowy. Beautifully executed, the floral is exacting in its design and the artist was most talented.The Bell Brothers and the Machett family both have ware attributed to them with this cobalt design. We are not sure, due to lack of documentation, which family it was that made this. There is said to have been a transition period in the 1850's when the two families were both using the kiln in Cornwall. This is hearsay and will probably never really know, unless a stamped piece comes to light.There is signs of wear on the body including some flaking on the handle. The bottom edge is chipped in places and rough. The base is a primitive lovers dream as it's very rough and primitive looking putting the age of this piece back quite far. The jug was found in the Hudson Valley region, another clue as to it's maker. Check out the stilt and firing marks on the lower sides.
