Antique Salt Glazed Stoneware 1 Gallon Size Crock made in Newark, New Jersey in the years just after the Civil War 1871 - 1875 by Conrad Haidle and John Sohn. Haidle and Sohn comprised the Union Pottery partnership for a short four year period before Sohn bid farewell and was replaced by J. Zipf in 1875. Haidle was interested in making "useful but beautiful ware for the home". Haidles designs included mostly florals and were all original and hand brushed with an artisan flare. The makers mark of Haidle & Co. was he and Sohn, but later was Haidle & Zipf both along with the Union Pottery moniker and then later so, just the Union Pottery mark with J. Zipf Prop.Limited in availability are these pieces of antique New Jersey stoneware with these short term partnership makers marks. The four years with Sohn, then the 3 years with Zipf yielded marks collectors love to find. This crock is a one gallon smaller size crock with a gorgeous flower on the face, perhaps a tulip, blooming. The design is hand brushed and very well done in light blue cobalt glaze. There is above the flower, the number "1" and the letter "g" signifying the gallon capacity. In between these marks is the stamped makers mark which reads;Haidle & Co. Union Pottery, Newark, N.J.There is a nice soft use of the salt glaze on the exterior and an Albany slip interior glaze.
