Victorian era porcelain three piece condensed milk can container. The fresh milk of the Victorian era often carried dangerous bacteria, was easily spoiled and had a very short shelf life. In 1856 Gail Borden founded the New York Condensed Milk Company. The condensed milk had a great taste, was safe and long lasting, but it came in an unattractive tin can which did not look good on the elegant Victorian table, therefore pretty, elegant and romantic porcelain condensed milk can holders were invented and designed to hide the unsightly cans. These porcelain holders are today greatly collectable. This particular porcelain container is cobalt blue and gold and ornate with delicate flowers. The flowers painted on two sides of the jar, the saucer and the lid are all similar to each other, but not two are identical since each was hand painted. The porcelain container has a small round hole in the base for easy removal of the empty can. The jar, saucer and lid are together approximately 6 1/2" tall. The jar's diameter is about 3 1/2". These pieces are in very good vintage condition with only minimal gold loss.
