Antique Persian Tile 4x4 in. King on Lt. Purple BackgroundThis 4x4 in. tile depicts a male figure dressed in an elaborate robe and hat.His hat is blue and yellow. His robe is yellow, blue and white. He has a mustache. There is a plant in the background and writing on one side.According to a British tile historian, this tile was made as late as the l960's, and possibly as early as the 1920's or 1930's. The clay was based on a soft limestone which fires at a relatively low temperature producing a somewhat porous body. A layer of tin glaze was brushed over the tile and the design painted on using metallic oxides. A further layer of lead based glaze was applied over the painting. A second firing followed at a lower temperature.I purchased this tile from the owner of a Middle Eastern store in Berkeley, California when he was unpacking his warehouse. It was imported to the U.S. in the 60's.
