Up for auction is this BEAUTIFUL ORIGINAL 1820-1890 BERLIN WORK EMBROIDERY PATTERN BOOKLET # 172 in a series, gouache on paper . This design for Berlin wool work shows a geometric pattern on a graphed charts. The charts imitate the canvas threads on which the design is to be stitched. Each square indicates where a stitch goes. It is by a German designer who made hand painted designs for Berlin woodwork 1820-1890. Each page has hand painted border and floral designs on one side, and printed alphabet, numerals and motifs on the reverse. Berlin wool work patterns were exported to Britain in large numbers. It became so popular that it became synonymous with needlework. Indeed in 1847, Mrs Henry Owen could begin her book Illuminated Ladies Book of Useful and Ornamental Needlework with 'Embroidery, or as it is more often called Berlin wool work.' This incredible piece of needlework history measures 3"X 3 3/4" when folded closed, there are 10 pages inside, all in good condition, and a front and back cover, which have tattering and tears, the back cover is separated from the front. All in all this is in good condition with vivid colors for its 150 or so years, though as one would expect, it must be handled with care to prevent tearing.
