Fabulous antique hand-pieced Double Irish Chain quilt to use, to display, or to add to your collection. The quilt is in pristine condition. Unused. Clean. Perfect. (I think this is the first quilt I've ever sold that I label "perfect.")The quilt dates to the second half of the 19th century. I'm calling it a Double Irish Chain Variation, because the maker alternated blocks of 25 1"squares with plain blocks that have 1" squares sewn into the corners. However, the pattern of light and dark fabrics doesn't mimic the typical Irish Chain design. Rather, the lights, darks, pinks, reds, greens, etc. are scattered randomly in each block. I count almost 2,500 tiny squares in this quilt!!!A great variety of prints and a few solids from the 19th century are used in this quilt, making it a great piece for fabric study. The fabrics look as if they still have the original finish/sizing. The quilt also has pencil lines on the setting blocks to follow when quilting.The piecing is done by hand and blocks are joined by hand. The narrow border and binding were applied by machine and sewn down by machine. The quilt is densely quilted by hand in diagonal lines on the 25 square blocks, and in a 1 inch grid on the setting blocks. Stitches are about 6 per inch, measuring on the top side only.
