Old German Beer Stein made by Villeroy and Boch Mettlach This is a beautiful lidded stein. Made of saltglazed stoneware with white relief decorations. This technique - colored stoneware with applied relief was far superior to all the rest of ceramics techniques employed by other factories. But it was very expensive at the time - not everybody could afford a Mettlach beer stein in 1880 - 1900. The stein has a pewter lid with a ceramics insert showing the Star of David - this symbol associated with the brewing industry in the old Germany. The stein is has a 0.25 L capacity. It is in very good condition the pewter has a slight abrasion. There are lovely detailed pictures of three different drinking crests around the stein (Drinken, Leiben, and Singen) and grape leaves on the back panel by the handle with a Star of David Under the Handle Also. The Star of David surrounds a cluster of grapes on the lid and Under the Handle. Colors are a beautiful Brown, Grey and Cream. It is approximately 5 inches tall from top of the lid to the bottom of the base and 3 1/2 inches diameter. There are no chips, cracks or signs of repair. The bottom is stamped in green Villeroy and Boch, Mettlach. Made in Germany. The number 1265 is inscribed on the bottom by the mark. Please See My Other listings...
