This beautiful antique French hand embroidered altar cloth and kneeling cushion date from the 19th century. They are both beautifully worked in fine woolwork on linen and the embroidery is superb. The cushion has four amazing large gold wire passementerie tassels at the corners. the old gold wire has taken on a beautiful soft gold with the passage of time and the look is pure faded grandeur. The cushion is still plump and comfy and feels as if it is filled with feathers or down. All of the wool work is intact and the edge is trimmed in a pale gold plaited wool braid. The backing is old gold coloured silk. The cushion measures: 21" x 17" (53.5cms x 43cms) and each wire tassel is 6" (15cms) long. The cushion would look wonderful on a chair or stool with the tassels hanging down. The altar cloth is very substantial and could make a small rug or runner too. The design matches the cushion and the two ends have hand tied knotted tassels in co ordinating shades. The backing is rich blue velvet.
