Solid Brass Salesman's Miniature Sample - Fire Insurance Wall Plaque. Plaque measures two & thirteen-sixteenths long, one & seven-eighth inches wide, and five-sixteenth inches deep. Made of solid brass. This miniature is a rare salesman's sample. Fire insurance wall plaques first appeared in London in 1710. Called fire marks, and cast in lead they were placed on the front outside of homes. Some had a number that corresponded with the insurance policy number. Later they became known as fire plates, were very colorful, and acted more as advertising for the insurance companies. Fire plate is in very good condition.
